What should you post on OpenUp? Start with what you are actually carrying.
A simple guide to opening up on OpenUp, supporting other people, and keeping the community useful instead of promotional.
By OpenUp ·
OpenUp is not built to be another place where everyone competes for attention. It is a place to put something real into words.
Start with what is actually on your mind
You do not need a dramatic story. You might have had a difficult shift at work, an argument with someone you care about, a lonely evening, pressure from university, money worries, a setback, anxiety about the future, or simply a day that felt heavier than usual. Those are exactly the kinds of things you can open up about.
Write the way you would explain it to someone who genuinely wanted to listen. You do not need perfect grammar, a clever caption or a polished version of yourself.
What belongs here
OpenUp works best when posts are about real feelings, experiences, worries, struggles, questions connected to what you are going through, recovery, hope or support for somebody else. You can also respond to another person with a Hug or a thoughtful comment when you do not have a post of your own to share.
What does not belong in the community feed is advertising, repeated promotion, spam or attempts to send people to external websites. OpenUp is a conversation space, not a traffic source. Hashtags can help describe a genuine post, but they should not be used to turn the feed into an advertisement.
Why putting feelings into words can help
There is research behind the broader idea of expressive writing, but it is important not to oversell it. A 2023 meta-analysis of 31 experimental studies involving 4,012 participants found a small but statistically significant longer-term reduction in depression, anxiety and stress symptoms after expressive writing. Other reviews have found mixed or very small effects, which means writing is not a guaranteed treatment and should not be presented as one. A 2025 systematic review of positive expressive writing found the most consistent benefits in wellbeing and positive affect, while effects on stress, anxiety and physical health were less consistent.
That is the right way to think about opening up here: putting an experience into words may help you organise what you are feeling, and sharing it can create an opportunity to be heard and supported. OpenUp is not therapy and does not replace professional mental-health care.
A useful first post can be simple
Try beginning with one honest sentence: “Today was harder than I expected because…” or “I have been keeping this to myself…” or “Does anyone else struggle with…?” Then explain only as much as you feel comfortable sharing.
If somebody responds, you do not owe them more detail than you want to give. The purpose is not to expose everything about yourself. It is to have somewhere you can be genuine without having to perform.
Help keep the space useful
Before posting, ask one question: am I sharing something with the community, or am I trying to advertise something to them? If it is the first, you are probably in the right place. If it is the second, the community feed is not the place for it.
And when somebody else opens up, remember that you do not always need to fix their problem. Sometimes a Hug, a kind sentence or letting them know they were heard is enough.
