OpenUp Stories: How to Share Your Writing and Create a Story Series

A practical guide to writing a Story on OpenUp, connecting parts into a series and choosing the right way to share.

Stories are a different way to share on OpenUp

Not every experience fits into a short social media update. Sometimes you want to tell people what happened, explain how it felt, or turn an idea into a story that someone can read properly. OpenUp Stories gives members a space to do that within the same community where they already post and support one another.

Stories are not the same as OpenUp Journal articles. The Journal is where OpenUp publishes editorial guides, explainers and articles like this one. Stories are written by community members as posts on the platform.

What can you write about?

A Story can be something that happened in your life, something funny, a fictional piece or a lesson you want to share. When creating a Story, choose a title and one of these categories:

  • Real Life — personal experiences and moments that mattered.
  • Funny & jokes — a lighter story or something that made you laugh.
  • Fiction — something imagined rather than a claim about a real event.
  • Inspirational — an experience or idea you hope will encourage others.
  • Life lessons — something you learned and want to explain.
  • Other — stories that do not fit neatly anywhere else.

Your category appears with the Story so readers can understand the type of writing before they start. You can use line breaks and paragraphs to make a longer story easier to follow.

How to publish your first Story

  1. Sign in to [OpenUp](https://openupzone.com/) and open the post composer.
  2. Choose Story rather than a regular post.
  3. Add a clear title, choose the category that best matches your writing and write the story.
  4. Review your words, visibility choice and any available interaction settings before you share.
  5. Publish when you are ready. Your Story becomes part of OpenUp's community posts.

A Story can contain up to 6,000 characters, including the title. It helps to give it a beginning and enough context for someone who does not know you. You do not need a dramatic ending: an honest, unfinished experience can still be worth sharing.

Unlike a temporary status update, OpenUp Stories are designed to remain available as posts rather than disappear after a day.

How Story Series work

Some stories need more than one part. Story Series lets you connect related Stories instead of making readers search through your profile.

When creating a Story, turn on Story series. You can choose New series to start one or Continue a series to attach a new part to a series you own. OpenUp tracks the parts in order so readers can move between the parts that have actually been published.

For example, you could write *Moving to a new country*, then continue it with a second part about making friends and a third part about finally feeling at home. A series works just as well for fiction or an ongoing personal account.

If a later part has not been published, readers should not be sent to an empty next chapter. A Story does not have to be part of a series; a complete, one-off Story is equally welcome.

Can you turn an existing Story into a series?

Yes. When editing a Story that is not already in a series, the author can add it to a new or existing series. Published parts that are already assigned to a series have placement protections, so think about the sequence before connecting them.

Are Story posts anonymous?

OpenUp supports anonymous-facing community sharing. Where this option is available for your Story, it hides your profile identity from other community members. It does not make your post anonymous to OpenUp itself. The post remains internally linked to your account, and authorised staff may access that information for safety and moderation purposes.

Be especially careful with real-life stories involving other people. Changing names is not always enough to protect someone's privacy if identifying details remain.

How do readers respond?

Stories use OpenUp's normal community-post experience. Readers can offer a Hug as a simple sign of support or join a conversation through comments where comments are enabled. Story posts also remain subject to OpenUp's reporting and moderation systems.

You do not have to share the most personal part of your life to take part. A funny memory, a story you invented or a reflection about an ordinary day can give somebody else a reason to connect.

Stories, Moments and the Journal are not the same thing

Stories are longer-form member posts with a title and a category, and they can be linked as a series. Moments is OpenUp's more immediate, full-screen way of viewing community content. OpenUp Journal is the public editorial section containing guides and articles that explain OpenUp and explore related topics.

Each has a different purpose. Choose the format that fits what you want to communicate rather than trying to fit every thought into the same type of post.

Start with one story worth telling

A good first Story can be simple: a small decision that changed your day, an awkward but funny moment, or something you once wished someone had explained to you. Give it a title, tell it in your own words and let the story speak for itself.
